The following text is published on behalf of Richard Mhinji, a member of BluA Malawi.

Residential property is very expensive in Malawi. House rentals form a greater part of monthly expenses in household.

In 2020, we had a vision of owning our own house permanently and move away from such expenses. We mobilized some resources and bought land (35 x 30 meters) earmarked for building a house. We paid for this land in bits. In 2022, we managed to mold 40.000 bricks on the same land, and we also managed to burn and make them ready for building! However, since then, we have had huge financial problems, so we haven't managed to start the building process.

However, the vision still lives on. Last year we embarked on farming to finance the house project. Unfortunately the harvest wasn't as good as expected because of a dry spell that impacted Malawi. We should have been miles ahead by now, but still the bricks remain unused, idle at the plot. We are trying farming again this year with the same main agenda of financing the project. God willing, we trust it going to take some turn this year.

Initially we are planning a small medium three bedroom house. It is our hope that this will sort our rental problems and open a new chapter for the future also. Some quarters of our house could also be rented out to give us some extra income. That is our vision and we thought of having the main house done by 2026. However, it looks to be an uphill task looking at how finances are at the moment.

We plan to build in phases. The 1st phase would be foundation. Then electing walls up to the beam level. Then finishing the wall and roofing. By this stage we may opt to move in and finish the rest while in there. Blu Acciaio was and shall be a great part of this project, we hope as in other projects.
