Community stories: Everyday life as a cyclist in rural Malawi

The following text is published on behalf of Richard Mhinji, a member of BluA Malawi.

Over all the years gone by since I came to know the people at Blu Acciaio Norway, there are a considerable number of things that have happened with the assistance of the BluA community.

Since Blu Acciaio is a cycling motivated group, I also developed the same spirit and purchased a bike with the help of Blu A Norway. The cycling suits were sent also from Norway.

In Malawi there are a lot of very interesting and attractive places for riding and hiking. I do ride alone most of the time, because the area I live in has few or none organised bicycle groups. In Lilongwe, or in the other cities, there are teams and they compete in organised competitions which I admire most. I hope one day I will be able to participate and probably come out triumphant.

But more import that riding is to raise enough money to make sure we have the essential stuff for everyday life, for example paying house rent, food, clothing, and other basic needs. This has been a challenge lately, as it has been difficult to find work.

These struggles prompted me to start with agriculture. Last season wasn't too good because of little rain. There were droughts towards the end of the cropping season so the yield wasn't as planned and every other plan was affected by that. But we are not giving up. I will write more about this in a later post.
